Futura came to London in 81 with the rock group 'The Clash'. He was hired to paint the backdrops live on stage on their tour of Europe. The first piece at the top was supposedly the first piece ever to be painted in London and was painted under the westway (although the blue Ling piece was painted by skam earlier that year)
The piece at the bottom is one of the backdrops he painted whilst on stage touring....nice work if you can get it!!

It was a Monday or Tuesday afternoon back in 1987 and I decided to have a wonder into the yard to see if there had been any pieces painted. I walked into the 2 shed with a folder under one arm and a camera in my hand. I saw 2 blokes standing there and walked straight upto them and said "hi I'm from the local youth adolescent centre, can I take some photos of the surface stock trains"? The blokes said yeah sure no problem and then showed me around the place, they even took me to where stuff got buffed.
I gave my camera to the bloke and asked if he could take a photo of me in front of the trains..I remember him saying "keep your feet this side of the yellow line, you don't want to fall in".

I was with Chane at Parsons on a Sunday at about 3 in the morning, Road number 21. I had been painting for about half an hour and was just testing my black out ready for my outline. All of a sudden this bloke came around the front of the train out of nowhere. He said "Oi, what do you think your doing son". I replied "excuse me"...he then said "What do you think your doing...now fuck off". I stood there, stretched out my arm pointing at my piece and said "VOILA" I then started walking towards him.."I'll tell you what mate why don't you fuck off I said as he started to back track shuffling across the tracks, before disappearing. I turned round and Chane was pissing himself with laughter. I said to Chane "come on lets go, the old bill will be called now".
We climbed up into the diary and 20 mins later watched the old bill raid the place as we sat there drinking milk and lemonade on an old sofa...I never got to finish the forbidden children piece in the end.

I bumped into Spyer a few weeks back and he was laughing about the time he went to do Uxbridge yard with the FLS boys, Tense, Blink, Gash etc. They was wondering around Uxbridge when they bumped into a load of Uxbridge lads. I knew a few of them from football and know at this time in the mid to late 90's they had a reputation for bashing the fuck out of anyone they didn't like or didn't recognise. Like alot of teenagers fuelled with stella, hash and a reputation to protect they decided to kick off with the FLS boys. Up steps one of the Uxbridge boys Dougie Mills....he walks upto Blink and bottles him over the head shouting "I'm Dougie Mills" This is why a few weeks later the FLS boys wrote this on the train!!

It costs a minimum of £24,000 to send someone to prison for a year and only £2,000 to be placed on tag. With prisons at near on capacity it amazes me how last month another 4 writers were sentenced for doing graffiti on walls and trains??
The following 4 stories are all true and taken from local and national newspapers.....it just goes to show how fucked up this justice system is in this country. You would have thought the government would have learnt from what happened to Skeam (R.I.P) in 2009.

1. A man from Barrow stabs another man in the face with a screwdriver leaving him with a permanent scar. The man receives a suspended sentence and 100 hours community service??

2. A man who has previous for beating women, racially abuses his wife and then attacks a policewoman when she arrives at the scene, leaving her with a permanent scar on her face. The man walks free and receives a suspended sentence??

3. Drink driver, two and a half times over the legal limit knocks a girl off her bike and drives off leaving her partially blinded in one eye. Once again the man walks free??

Legendary Sheffield writer Fisto/Fista was sentenced in 1996 to 5 years inside for graffiti. I remember going up to Sheffield in 1993 as a teenager to see Chelsea play Sheffield United and he had a load of big lairy dubs on the side of the M1 motorway....his classic 90's clean letters stuck out a mile.
His court case was massive and made the national newspapers and after an appeal he was released after a year inside. Fisto who is now touching on 40 is now a full time fine artist...here's what the man has to say on how things have evolved since being released nearly 14 years ago...

"It was very weird, surreal even, the things that happened to people around me at that time,"
"It was completely weird that one man, the judge, wanted to get his name in the papers for putting me away for five years. People in the court were genuinely shocked. No-one expected that kind of sentence for what? Painting?
"I was being locked up at the age of 22 for things I had done when I was 18. It was affecting my family.
"It was in the papers and on the national news. People in certain papers like to paint an image of me as a criminal without knowing anything about me."
"I had a fairly normal upbringing my Dad's heart is in the right place but my mother Angela was my mentor and still is, she is a very intelligent woman and always wanted me to do well. But when you're growing up in that kind of area there are distractions.
"There was an element of 17 and 18-year-old's rebellion in the graffiti. I had seen break dancing and graffiti as part of the Hip-Hop thing of the 1980s. I started doing a few tags and and painting in 1988 and 1989 and got into it.
"The reason I did it was because it had meaning. Forget the tagging and the motorway stuff. I was doing murals for people on the Manor, Burngreave and Darnall. I did not do it on people's houses. I did not do it where graffiti was not accept-able. To me it was public art."
To others it was a nuisance and they won't forget the tagging or the motorway stuff.
It's not a joke, or a lark...No I don't regret it. What good would it do for me to say that I regret something I did 15 or 16 years ago? I don't say that I condone other people doing it."
"I had lots of offers when I came out but my head wasn't right for a long time," he said.
"I had sort myself out."
"I put a lot of stuff behind me in that time."
"With new art it is always a progression from the fringes of society to the centre, that is always the way it has been.
"It is difficult in this case because people have to live with the blight of graffiti in the real world and we in no way endorse as a gallery that type of vandalism. But we do see a continuity in the work that has come from street art.
"I love what I do, I love art, it allows me to express myself and I get by for money,"
"I like graphic art and I like the forms and shapes of Arabic and eastern writing. I'm trying to get something over in my work but I'm not trying to say anything overtly political.
"There is a meaning behind everything I do. It's spiritual.
"It's not just about painting for the sake of it, it's a path. I'm not sure where it's leading yet. Hopefully somewhere nice and sunny and peaceful.
"Maybe somewhere where money doesn't count.
"At the end of the day I'm not conquering anything, I'm just doing my painting. I'm not sure what my plans are but I want to go to Europe again.
I want to see if there's anything better than living in dreary old England."

It was the summer of 1996..i'd just finished school and one of my mates had worked out how to make fake i-d on his computer.
16 years old and full of energy, a load of us got tickets to go to see Oasis, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and Ocean colour scene at Knebworth. We had been going to Camden Palace every Friday night leading upto the Knebworth concert. The night at camden was called Big, Fat and juicy and was a hardcore, jungle, drum and bass night which was jam packed full of scar faced wrong un's from all over town.
The week of the Oasis concert me and my cousin decided we didn't have enough money to go to Camden so we stayed around a mates house and wait for the others to get back, with the intention to 'take it easy'
We had got a load of blues for the Knebworth day which was on the sat, but for some reason thought we could have a cheeky half while waiting for the others to get back from Camden. Before we knew it I was persuading my cousin who didn't write to come and paint a trackside with me on the big met...easier said than done when you are rushing your tits off. The ideas you have when you are off your nut!!
Off we go..I know the spot..I didn't pin up as I was clueless, and just finished a letter at a time...I got the first 2 letters done and all was going good until I realised we was on a slope and I couldn't finish the final 2 letters off as it was too high to reach up. I climbed onto my cousins shoulders and tryed to finish off the dub..easier said than done. The final 2 letters looked like bags of shit as far as I can remember.
We got back to my mates house and continued to finish off the blues before the others got back in..so much for taking it easy.
With no sleep we got on the met the next morning and headed towards Euston to then catch the train upto Knebworth. I remember being sick as the train pulled into Preston Road with all my mates laughing at me.
We got to Knebworth and I remember collapsing under a tree and falling asleep. I missed Ocean colour scene and half of the Chemical brothers as I was asleep but woke up and after 2 quick pints got to see Oasis and The Prodigy who smashed the place apart. Me and my cousin still laugh about that night and about how much of a mess we must of looked...GOOD TIMES!!
